Why Not Just Write It Yourself?

You could. But here's what most people get wrong:

Wrong statute citation. The FDCPA has specific sections (15 U.S.C. § 1692g) that trigger the collector's obligation. Citing the wrong section — or none at all — signals you don't know the law. Collectors ignore those letters.
Missed the 30-day deadline. You have exactly 30 days from first contact to demand validation. If your letter doesn't reference this window and the collector's obligation to cease activity, you lose your strongest leverage.
No cease-collection language. A validation letter without explicit cease-collection language lets the collector keep calling and reporting. The right language forces them to stop until they prove the debt.
Weak formatting. A validation request dashed off in an email doesn't convey authority. A properly formatted PDF with legal citations and certified-mail-ready formatting does.
